Research: Hebdige's Theory

The music industry is made up of many different sub cultures that differ from what is classed as ‘mainstream’. Many sub cultures are variations of each other. For example, Rockers and Metal-heads. They are very similar, but sub genres of music and clothing separate them. These types of people refuse to stick to what is classed as a mainstream society and they choose to be different and rebel against typical stereotypes. These people also tend to prefer niche music rather than the music that wider varieties of people listen to. Hebdige said that many groups are involved in the protest against the mainstream society, which means that as well as there being a lot of people who do stick to the mainstream groups

-how have sub-cultures developed over time in the music industry?
